Al Dir’iya is a historic oasis located on the banks of Wadi Hanifa., Riyadh. Diriyah was the original home of the Saudi Royal Family and served as the capital of the Emirate of Diriyah under the first Saudi dynasty from 1744 to 1818. It is closely linked to Wadi Hanifa environmentally and culturally creating some kind of emotional and positive bond between man and nature, which in turn has had a great impact socially, economically and culturally in the region. Through this interaction with the environment it embodied the cultural identity of the region to become a symbol of an authenticity. Then gradually it became a model of thriving oasis community in the desert environment.  

Al Dir’iya is distinguished for its nature and beautiful settings, such as streams and fertile lands and topography representing stunning landmarks contributing to local people’s cultural expertise in architecture and life style as reflected in the construction of their dwellings and agricultural villages and the irrigation network in its neighborhood.

Importance of Turaif Neighborhood:

Turaif Neighborhood is considered as one of the most important landmarks in the Historic Al Dir’iya since it is the home of the most important archeological buildings, palaces and historical monuments. It includes many of the administrative buildings of the Saudi First State, such as Salwa Palace which was built in the late sixteen century Hijri and it was a ruling base of the whole country.  Besides, there are many other landmarks, like the Imam Mohammad bin Saud Mosque, Saad bin Saud Palace, Nasir bin Saud Palace, Traditional Guesthouse which consists of Turaif Hamam (bathrooms).

Turaif is surrounded by a large fence with towers that were used for surveillance and the defense of the city in the past.

Al Dir’iya Museum in Salwa Palace:

The museum aims to introduce the history of the Saudi First State through a number of museum exhibits and activities. The museum offers an open air show among the restored ruins along a special corridor devoted for this purpose that consists of information screens on the most important parts of the palace and historic events that took place there, in addition to the closed museum display, which includes panels, mockups, relics and documentaries.

Arabian Horse Museum:

The museum aims to introduce the Arabian horses and the proper ways of horse breeding during Al Dir’iya period of prosperity. The museum is located within the neighboring buildings of Imam Abdullah bin Saud Palace and the horse stables next the palace.

Trade and Monetary Museum:

The museum is located within the buildings of ‘Bait Al Mal’ (Money House) and Sabalat Mody (free drinking water fountain). The museum display the economic prosperity that Al Dir’iya had witnessed, in addition to displaying a number of coins, scales and endowments.

Visitor Center:

The visitor center offers tourist-guiding services to the visitors of Turaif neighborhood. The center is a new building located opposite to Salwa Palace contains technical equipment for displaying.

Light and Sound, and Multimedia Shows:

The show offers audio drama narrating the history of the Saudi First State in addition to spot lights over Salwa Palace using Light and Sound technology, in addition to five shows of multimedia at selected locations in the neighborhood.

Al Dir’iya Documentation Center:

The center is located in the Ibrahim bin Saud Palace. It constitutes a documentary reference for Al Dir’iya and Turaif neighborhood history. Also it is used as a location by the research, documentation and study teams.

Turaif Management Center:

The center is located at Fahad bin Saud Palace and it manages everything related to administrative affairs in Turaif neighborhood.

Turaif Souk:

The souk offers traditional and local handicraft products. It is located within a number of restored buildings devoted to display such elements, and consists of a number of restaurants, and visitor services.

Al Bejairi Neighborhood Projects:

Al Bejairi Neighborhood enjoys scientific importance as it is the first ever university in the Najd region, which has graduated several generations of Islamic scholars. Al Bejairi is located on the eastern bank of Wadi Hanifa. It includes the mosque of Sheikh Mohammad bin Abdul Wahab, which is one of the most significant landmarks in the neighborhood. In addition, it includes a number of mosques and Qur’an traditional schools (Katateeb) which had greatly contributed to the prosperity of education and science in the region.

Central Area Al Bujairi center.:   

The central area consists of shops, restaurants, car parking besides the major courtyard of Al Bejairi Neighborhood, management service office and Al Dir’iya grand park.
