Al Wahba is the largest volcanic crater in the Middle East and Asia. It is 250 m (820 ft) deep and 2 km (1.2 mi) in diameter.The bottom of the crater is covered with white sodium phosphate crystals.

It is located about 250 km northeast of Ta’if (southwest of Riyadh). Geologists have concluded that Wahba Crater is an extinct volcano. Some areas of the caldera walls have native flora as well as previously cultivated palm trees, the region’s famous Dom trees (named after the nearby town of Umm Dom), and Arak trees. At the bottom of the crater there is a small seasonal waterfall formed by precipitation in the region. Coating the center of the crater is a white layer of salt believed to be the evaporated residue of a shallow lake. Locals in the area have created stories and legends over the years about the origins of the crater, including the story that it was caused by an asteroid colliding into earth millions of years ago. Small pieces of obsidian and peridot (a semi-precious stone) can be found in the crater.

നാല് അഞ്ചു വര്ഷം മുന്നേ സൗദിയിൽ എത്തിയ നാളുകളിൽ എന്റെ ബക്കറ്റ് ലിസ്റ്റിൽ കേറി കൂടിയ കുറച്ചു നാമങ്ങളായിരുന്നു Edge of The World , ജബൽ അൽ ഖാറ, Historical Madeena and Makkah ആൻഡ്  Wahba crater .

അതിൽ വഹബ ഒരു പാട് തവണ അവളെ സമീപിച്ചെങ്കിലും പുൽകാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചെങ്കിലും അവൾ പിടി തരാതെ വഴുതി മാറി നടക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.

കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം യാമ്പു ഫ്ലവർ ഷോ കഴിഞ്ഞു മദീനയും സന്ദർശിച്ചു നിൽക്കുമ്പോഴാണ് അപ്രതീക്ഷിതമായി പ്ലാനിംഗ് ഒന്ന് റീ-റൂട്ട് ചെയ്തത്.ഇത്തവണ ഞങ്ങൾ നാല്  പേരുണ്ടായതിനാൽ അവൾക് പിടി തരാതെ രക്ഷ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. ഇവളാണ് വഹബ crater not  haifa wahab. ഡോണ്ട് മിസ് അണ്ടർസ്റ്റാൻഡ്.

രണ്ടു കിലോമീറ്റർ വ്യാസവും കാൽ കിലോമീറ്റർ ആഴവും ഉള്ള ഈ ഗർത്തം അഗ്നി പർവത സ്ഫോടന ഫലമായി ഉണ്ടായതെന്നാണ് ഗവേഷകർ കണ്ടെത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഒരു ഭീമൻ ഉൽക്ക വീണു ഉണ്ടായതാണെന്നും  ചിലർ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

തായിഫ്ൽ  നിന്നും 150 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍, സഞ്ചരിച്ചാല്‍ എത്തിചേരുന്ന ഒരു വിസ്മയ ലോകം. അഗ്നിപര്‍വ്വതങ്ങള്‍ നിരന്ന കറുത്ത മലനിരകള്‍,

പാറി പോകുന്ന കൊടും കാറ്റ് കൊണ്ടാണ് അവൾ ഞങ്ങളെ വരവേറ്റത്. മദീനയിൽ നിന്നും 300km. ഒരു രക്ഷയുമില്ലാത്ത കാറ്റ്. ഒരു വേള ശരിക്കും പറന്നു പോകുമോന്ന് സംശയിച്ചു ഞങ്ങളുടെ കാർ വരെ ഒരു കുഴിയിൽ നിർത്തിയിട്ടാണ് യാത്ര തുടർന്നത്‌.

വാഹബയുടെ മേൽ ഭാഗത്തു ഇപ്പോഴും നല്ല കാറ്റാണ്. ചില നേരങ്ങളിൽ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയാൽ ശരിക്കും പാറി പോകുമെന്ന് അവിടെ ഉള്ള പാകിസ്താനി സെക്യൂരിറ്റി പറഞ്ഞു. അദ്ദേഹം രണ്ടാഴ്ച മുൻബ് കാറ്റടിച്ചു പുറത്തിറങ്ങാതെ ഇരിക്കുക ആയിരുന്നെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു. വഹബ യിലേക് പോകുമ്പോൾ അല്പം വൈകിയിരുന്നു. അതിനാൽ പോകുന്ന വഴിയിൽ സായിപ്പൻമാർ തിരിച്ചു പോക്ക് തുടങ്ങിയിരുന്നു.

വാഹനങ്ങള്‍ പാര്‍ക്ക് ചെയ്യാന്‍ വിശാലമായ സ്ഥലം, ക്രേറ്ററിന് ചുറ്റും കല്ല് കൊണ്ട് ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ അര ആൾക്ക് പൊക്കമുള്ള മതിലും, റസ്റ്റ്‌ റൂം, തുടങ്ങി പല സൗകര്യങ്ങളും സൗദി സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നു. പെട്രോഡോളറിന്‍റെ ശക്തി കുറഞ്ഞ് കുറഞ്ഞ് വരുന്ന സമയത്ത് പിടിച്ച് നില്‍ക്കാന്‍ ടൂറിസത്തിലേക്ക് തിരിയുന്നതിന്‍റെ എല്ലാ അടയാളങ്ങളും അവിടെ കാണാമായിരുന്നു.

820 അടി താഴ്ചയും രണ്ട് രണ്ടര കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ വ്യാസവുമുള്ള ഒരു കുഴിയാണ് ഇത്. സോഡിയം ഫോസ്ഫേറ്റ് നിറഞ്ഞ പ്രതലമാണ് താഴെ. മുകളില്‍ നിന്നും നോക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ഓംലെറ്റ്‌ അടിച്ചപോലെ ഉണ്ട് but ചട്ടിക്ക് 2 കിലോ മീറ്റർ വലിപ്പുമുണ്ടെന്ന് മാത്രം. കുറച്ചു നേരം ഗർത്ത ത്തിന്റെ മുകളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള വ്യൂ ഒക്കെ കണ്ടു ആഞ്ഞു വീശുന്ന  കാറ്റിൽ പിടിച്ചു നിന്ന് ഗർത്ത ത്തിന്റെ അടി ഭാഗത്തോട്ട് ഇറങ്ങാനുള്ള തയ്യാറെടുപ്പിലായിരുന്നു. വൃത്ത ആകൃതിയിലുള്ള അടിഭാഗം മുകളിൽ നിന്ന് കാണാൻ നല്ല ഭംഗിയാണ്. അവിടെയുള്ള ആളുകളെ ഒരു പൊട്ടു പോലെ കാണാൻ സൂക്ഷിച്ചു നോക്കുക തന്നെ വേണം. ആ കാഴ്ച കുറെ നേരം ആസ്വാദിച്ച ശേഷം താഴേക്കിറങ്ങാനുള്ള ഒരുക്കത്തിലായിരുന്നു ഞങ്ങൾ. നല്ല തണുപ്പും കാറ്റുമുണ്ടെങ്കിലും എല്ലാവരും ജാക്കറ്റും തൊപ്പിയുമൊക്കെ ധ രിച്ചിരുന്നതിനാൽ ഒരു പരിധി വരെ അതിനെ നേരിടാൻ പറ്റി.മുകളിൽ നിന്ന് നോക്കിയാ തോന്നും ഇതൊക്കെ എന്ത്. ഇതൊക്കെ ചെറുത്  ഇവളല്ല    ഇതിനപ്പുറവും ചാടിക്കടന്നവനാണ് ഈ KK ജോസഫ് അല്ല expat traveler   എന്ന്. ഇറങ്ങുന്തോറും ആഴം കൂടി കൂടി വരുന്ന ലാവ ഉറച്ച കറുത്ത മുര്‍ച്ചയുള്ള പറകള്‍ക്കിടയില്‍. ചവിട്ടടയില്‍ ഒന്ന് പിഴച്ചാല്‍ ചിലപ്പോള്‍ താഴെ വീണു മരണം വരെ സംഭവിക്കാം. ഇറങ്ങുന്തോറും കാറ്റിന്റെ ശക്തി കുറഞ്ഞു കുറഞ്ഞു വന്നു. ഇറങ്ങാന്‍ വേണ്ട സമയം ഏകദേശം ഒരു മണിക്കൂർ എടുക്കും. തിരിച്ചു കേറാൻ ആരോഗ്യമുള്ളവർക് അത്ര തന്നെ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഒന്നര മണിക്കൂർ.

മുകളില്‍ നിന്നും നോക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ഓംലെറ്റ്‌ അടിച്ചപോലെ സുന്ദരിയായ ആ അഗ്നിപര്‍വ്വത മുഖം ഇപ്പോള്‍ കാലിനടിയില്‍ ആയിരിക്കുന്നു. മരീചിക പോലെ അകന്നകന്ന് പോകുന്ന പ്രതീതിയായിരുന്നു ഇറങ്ങിയപ്പോള്‍. മുകളില്‍ നിന്ന് നോക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അടുത്ത് എന്ന് തോന്നുന്ന അടിഭാഗത്ത് എത്താന്‍ കരുതിയതിലുമധികം സമയമെടുത്തു.

ആദ്യ കാലങ്ങളില്‍ ശരിയായ വഴി ഒന്നും ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു എന്നാല്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്‍ഷം മുതല്‍ ടുറിസം വിഭാഗം ചെറിയ സൗകര്യങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്ത് വരുന്നുണ്ട്.
താഴെ നമ്മളെ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നത് മറ്റൊരു ലോകം. മേല്‍നിന്നും നോക്കിയാല്‍ വെളുത്ത നിറത്തില്‍ കാണുന്നത് സോഡിയം ഫോസ്ഫരെറ്റ് . ഇതിന്‍റെ നടുവിലുടെ നടന്നു ഒരറ്റം എത്തുമ്പോള്‍ യാത്രക്ക് ആവേശമായ ജിയോ ക്യാച്ച്ങ്ങ് ഗെയിം . നമ്മുക്ക് മുമ്പേ അവിടം സന്ദര്‍ശിച്ചവര്‍ ഒരുക്കി വെച്ച ഒരു വെല്ലുവിളി. അതും കഴിഞ്ഞ് തിരിച്ചുള്ള കയറ്റം. ദാഹം വളരെ കൂടുതല്‍ ആയിരിക്കണം ആവിശ്യമായ വെള്ളം പിന്നെ മധുര നാരങ്ങ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഗ്ളൂക്കോസ് പൌഡർ എല്ലാം നാം കരുതേണ്ടത് ആണ്. ഇവിടെന്നുള്ള  സുര്യഅസ്തമയം അത് ഒരു കാഴ്ച തന്നെയാണ്.

ഒന്ന് കണ്ണടച്ച് നിശബ്ദതമായി നിന്നാല്‍ ആരൊക്കെയോ നമ്മോട്‌ അനുഭവങ്ങള്‍ , പുതിയ പുതിയ അറിവുകള്‍ , പങ്ക് വയ്ക്കുന്നതായി തോന്നും.അതിനെ കാതോര്‍ത്തു  നില്ല്ക്കുന്ന നക്ഷത്രങ്ങള്‍. കാവലായി കൂടെ ചന്ദ്രനും. ആ ഇരുത്തം നേരം പുലരും വരെ നീളും.

നേരം ഇപ്പോൾ ശരിക്കും ഇരുട്ടായിരുന്നു കണ്ണട വെക്കുന്ന    ഞാൻ ആണെകിൽ കൂളിംഗ് ഗ്ലാസ് വിത്ത് പവർ ആയിരുന്നു ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നത് ഒന്നും കാണാൻ പറ്റാത്ത അവസ്ഥ. കയറി മടുത്ത സഹ സഞ്ചാരികൾ ഈ കയറ്റം ആദ്യവും ഇറക്കം പിന്നീടും ആയ മതി ആയിരുന്നു എന്നൊക്കെ പിറു പിറു ക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്ന്നു.

താമസ സ്ഥലമായ ഖർജിലും ഉണ്ട് ഉൽക്ക വീണുണ്ടായ സമാന മായ ഗർത്തങ്ങൾ പക്ഷെ ഇത് പോലെ ഇറങ്ങാൻ പറ്റില്ലെന്ന് മാത്രം.   അതികം നേരം കളയാതെ വഹബ  യോട് ഇനിയും കാണാമെടീ എന്നും പറഞ്ഞു  ഞങ്ങൾ അടുത്ത സ്വീകരണ സ്ഥലമായ റിയാദിലോട്ട് വണ്ടി പിടിച്ചു.
